Abstract

Effective Microorganism or EM is widely distributed to the farmers with diversity application purposes. The experiment was conducted at Soil Microbiology Research Group. Division of Soil Science to obtain the effect of EM on the growth and nitrogen fixation efficiency of Blue Green Algae (BGA). Five species of BGA, Nostoc sp., Calothrix sp., Tolypothrix sp., A. siamensis and A. royzae were cultured in N-free nutrient solution (BG11) containing EM at the concentration of 0, 150, 300 and 600 ppm, respectively. Dry biomass, ARA and chlorophyll content were estimated as growth and nitrogen fixing efficiency parameter of BGA. Results found that the growth and nitrogen fixation of BGA in EM solution at the concentrations of 150 and 300 ppm were better than control. The growth reduction was found at the concentration of EM upper than 300 ppm.

Abstract

The application of EM formula Sutojoo for the control of insect pests widely distributes among farmers through extension media such as radio, television, newspaper and training workshop result in the acceptance by many farmers. It is interesting to learn whether there was any mode of action adversely affected the insects. Testing of antifeeding effect, ovipositon deterrence, and stomach poison on Helicoverpa armigera – larvae, contact poison on H. armigera, Spodoptera litura, S. exigua and repellent effect on Epilachna spp revealed that EM alone had no effect on tested insects, but when mixed with neem seed extract good efficacy on antifeeding, stomach poison and repellent effect were obtained. In accordance with the study it may conclude that EM formula Sutojoo has no place in insect control.

Abstract

The effect of EM on the growth and yield of rice, corn and sorghum were studied in field condition at Udonthani Rice Experiment Station, Chainat Field Crop Research Center and Supanburi Field Crop Research Center for corn and sorghum. The experimental design was randomize complete block with 3 treatments; check, EM and N-P-K, and 4 replication. The EM treatment were the application of 5 litters of EM solution per 30 m2 area (EM solution was mixture of EM: molasses: water = 1:1:500 by volume) for corn and sorghum and 2.5 liters/25 m2 of EM for rice treatment. Fertilizer treatment were 5-5-5 kg/rai of N-P2O5 respectively, as basal and 5 kg-N/rai as topdressing for corn and sorghum and 3-4-2 kg/rai of N-P2O5-K2O respectively as basal and 3 kg-N/rai as topdressing for rice. Results showed that the yield of corn, sorghum and rice in EM treatment were the same as check but loneer than N-P-K treatment.

Abstract

The preliminary studies on the effectiveness of EM for controlling the major insect pests of chinese kale such as: Diamond back moth (Plutella xylostella (Linn.)), Beet army worm (Spodoptera exigua (Hubner)). Cabbage looper (Trichoplusia ni Hubner) and Leaf esting beetle (Phyllotreta sinuate Steph.). The studies were vonducted in farmer’s chinese kale plot at amphur Thamoung, Kanchanburi province, during August-December 1993. Randomized Complete block design with four treatments and five replications were carried out at the different rates of EM. The results from the two trials was confirmarily showed by the same result as EM was not effective to control the four species of insect pests in chinese kale plot which mentioned above. As well as the quality yield of chinese kale and the percentage of infestation in the tested plot showed to significantly different when compared with the untreated plot.

Abstract

Total count of fungi in EM product lot 1, lot 2, and lot 3, at the period of 0, 8 and 16 weeks were made on PDA and martin “s medium. The results showed that total number of fungi in each EM product were 103-104 CFU/ml. Number of fungi in EM product lot 3 were lower than the others. Number of fungi at each level of EM product, surface, middle and bottom of the containers were not different. Number of fungi at 16 weeks showed tendensy to decrease. Number of fungi on PDA and Martin’s medium were not different. From the identification of fungi isolates showed that Aspergillus niger, Penicillium (light green) Penicillium (gray) and Penicillium (green and wrinkly) were found in all 3 lots of EM products. Aspergillus fumigatus, A. flavipes and Rhizopus were found only in EM product lot 1. Emericella (white), Emericella (creamy white) and Fusarium were found in EM product lot2 and 3 while Penicillium (grayish green) and Aspergillus flavus were found only in EM product lot 2 and Aspergillus oryzae only in EM product lot3. Study on the viability of each fungi in each EM product were made. The result showed that in EM product lot 1 only Penicillium (light green) and Penicillium (gray) were present until 16 weeks. In EM product lot2, Emericella (white) and Emericella (creamy white) were found and increased in 8 and 16 weeks. EM. lot 3 only Emericella (white) was found and increased until 16 weeks.

Abstract

The effect of EM 5 on African red mite, Eutetranychus africanus (Tucker) Citrus rust mite, Phyllocoptruta oleivora (Ashamead) and Citrus yellow mite, Eotetranychus cendanai (Rimando) were examined in the laboratory of Entomology and Zoology Division. This study was made to determine the possibility of developing some effective microorganisms to control the important citrus mites. The EM 5 mixture including30% ethyl alcohol, acetic acid and molasses were diluted with water into 5 concentrations : 100, 75. 50, 25 and 12.5%. The pure mixture excluded EM and a recommended acaricide, propargite 0.045% were included to test the toxicity on these as well. All treatments were evaluated by use of the leaf disc-dip technique. The residual actions on mite mortality were determined 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours after treated. Excluded the errors of this experiment, the result would conducted on 48 hours after treated, The mite mortality treated with propargite 0.045% was one hundred percentage which was non significantly different from mixture plus EM 100% and mixture without EM 100%. Because the 100% mixture with and without EM gave the some effect on mite mortality, the result was concluded that the toxicity to mite was not caused by EM. They might be killed due to the compounds in mixture, such as acetic acid, ethyl alcohol or due to the very high sticky of molasses.

Abstract

Insecticidal and antifeedant test of EM to the leaf roller, (Lamprosema diemenatis (Guenee)) were studied and carried out in the laboratory during April 1994. Insecticidal study of EM on the third instar larvae showed non significantly different between the toxicity of solution A (mixed solution with EM5) and solution B (mixed solution with out EM5) or control (sprayed with fresh water or on spraying). In the case of antifeedant test it found that, the larvae could less damage on the leaf sprayed with the two mixed solutions. But the percentage of leaf damage was not significantly different between the leaf sprayed with solution A and B.

Abstract

The trail on the effect of EM biofertilizer on yield and quality of tomato was conducted in Pichit Horticultural Ressearch Center from September 1994 to March 1995. The main objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of EM on yield and quality of tomato. The experiment was arranged in RCB with 10 replicates and consisted of seven treatments as follows, 1) EM solution 2) EM and manure decomposed 3) Molass and manure 4) EM, molass and manure decomposed 5) Mamure 6) Fertilizer grade 15-15-15 at rate 80 kg./rai and manure 7) Control with no material added. The results was found that the addition of fertilizer 15-15-15 with manure can significantly increase vegetative parts (ie. Plant height, bush width and stem width) from the crop establishment stage to harvest. Every treatment combined with EM has the same effect as the manure treatment on these three growth indices. However, all decomposed EM trended to perform better growth than those applied with EM. There was on effect on quality of tomato in term of fruit weight and number fruits per plant in all treatments evaluated. It was observed that the addition of 1) composed EM incombination with manure and molass, 2) composed EM and manure and 3) fertilizer 15-15-15 and manure increased fruit weight compared with the control treatment by 26.2%, 25% and 18.9% respectively and fruit number (22.9%, 20.5% and 20.5% respectively).

Abstract

The effect of EM on the growth of VA mycorrhizal fungi was tested in this experiment by conducting in the pot trial. Pear millet (Pennisetum glaucum R.Br.) were grow in the sterile soil and was inoculated by two species of VA mycorhizal fungi. The experiment was employed by Randomized Complete Block Design with 4 replications and 9 treatments, comparing using EM with VA mycorrhizal fungi and no EM. After 6 month, the infected root and number of spores in soil has been examined. The result showed the evidence of the effect of EM on the VA mycorrhizal growth by decreasing amount of spores and percent of root infection.
