Abstract

Seroprevalence and risk factors associated with caprine arthritis encephalitis virus (CAEV) infection of meat goats in Chainat province were studied from January to June 2010, Data collected by questionnaires and serum samples from a total of 61 goat farms were used. Serum samples from 1,333 goats were tested for CAEV antibodies using cELISA. Result revealed a true prevalence of 11.51% Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that risk factors associated with CAEV infection included herd size (OR = 22.02, p < 0.05), raising time (year) (OR= 1.78, p < 0.05) and a history of mastitis problems (OR:30.23 ; p < 0.05) . However, mastitis might not be a risk factor CAEV infection, CAEV would rather cause udder infection. The present study indicated that goats raised in Chainat province had CAE with a prevalence of greater than 10% , and risk factors were related to farm management. Therefore, screening test for CAE infection should be performed in Chainat province to control and pervent spreading of infection.

Abstract

Prevalence and risk factors of brucellosis seropositivity of meat goats in Chainat were studied during january to June 2010 . Serum samples of 4,150 meat goats from 71 herds were collected and analyzed for antibodies against Brudella infection using modified Rose Bengal test (mRBT) and complement fixation test (CFT) . Data of goat health and farm management were collected by questionnaires. Risk factors for Brucella seropositivity were analyzed using a multivariable logistic regression model. Results showed that a true prevalence of Brucella infection in meat goats was 1.33% . Out of the 71 investigated herds, 10 (14.08%) herds had at least one positive animal.Risk factor associated with Brucella infection at the herd level was that the farm with a history of abortion during the previous year had approximately ten times (OR = 9.70) as high to have at least one goat with seropositive to Brucella infection as the farm without abortion. Although, the individual prevalence was relatively low, herd prevalence was high, indicating that goat farms in Chainat still had at least one goat suffered from Brucella infection. Therefore, a strategy to control spreading of infection between herds should be implemented to eradicate Brucella from Chainat province.
