The holding solution containing 250 mg/l HQS and 5% sucrose with optimum concentration of 400 mg/l MH increased vase life, water uptake, fresh weight and water conductivity and reduced water loss, vascular blockage as compared to the holding solution without MH. MH + sucrose was less effective than HQS + sucrose in prolonging the vase life of cut roses. |

The pH of pulsing solutions was adjusted to 4.0 by citric acid. The solution containing 5% sucrose together with 300 ppm sodium benzoate and pulsed for 24 hours gave maximum vase life of cut roses up to 5.9 days with the least bent nect of 18.0% and slight blueing. Cut roses in the control had vase life only 2.1 days with the most bent neck of 69.0% and severe blueing. |

The holding solution containing 5% sucroce + 20 mg l-' AgNO, also significantly increased the vase-life of rose cult ivars 'Eiffel Tower', 'Swartmore' and 'Yankee' but not' King's Ransom' and 'Confidence'. AgNO, slightly reduced ethylene production of 'Christain Dior' flowers held in distilled water. AgNO, greatly reduced ethylene production of flowers in solution containing 1-aminocyclopropane-l.-carboxylic acid (ACC); AgNO, also counteracted the effect of ethylene action induced by ACC. AgNO, greatly reduced microbial population in vase-water and improved water uptake of'Chirstian Dior' flowers. Silver thiousulfate (STS) complex was not as effective as AgNO, for the increase in vase-life of cut roses and the reduction of microbial population. |

Cut roses were packed with the following methods : wrapping with newspaper and both ends opened, wrapping with newspaper and both ends opened before packing in corrugated box, placing in perforated polyethylene (PE) bag with sealing and packing in corrugated box, placing in perforated PE bag with sealing and placing in non-perforated PE bag with sealing, then kept dry at 3?1?C (80% RH) and 10?1?C (73% RH). Cut roses were removed from cold room every three days to evaluate their quality, storage life and vase life. The results showed that cut roses in non-perforated PE bag with sealing kept dry at 3?1?C had the best quality and longest storage life of 12 days. Cut roses stored under the above conditions had no signicant difference in vase life from that of freshly cut roses without storage. Cut roses kept dry at 10?1?C had the storage life less than three days and their vase life at room temperature was very short. |

Cut roses were removed from cold room and polyethylene bags every 3 days before holding them in tap water at ambient temperature to determine their vase life, water uptake, the change in fresh weight, bent neck and blueing. The results showed that cut roses held in distilled water before keeping dry in cold room had shorter vase life than those without water pretreatment. The longer the cut rose held in water, the shorter the vase life. Water pretreatment had no effect on blueing. The effect of water pretreatment on vase life was discussed in relation to their water uptake and fresh weight changes. |

The pH of holding water was adjusted to 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 with citric acid and/or potassium hydroxide as necessary. The results showed that rose vase life tended to increase as the pH was lowered. The optimum pH of distilled and rain water was 4 while the pH of tap water was 5. Lowering the pH by citric acid reduced blueing and bent neck and increase fresh weight, water conductivity and water consumption of cut roses. |
