Abstract

Tra catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus [Sauvage, 1878]) cultured in Vietnam is one of the most important products for export to international market such as U.S.A., Japan and Europe. The bacterial isolation was conducted from pond-cultured Tra catfish in the provinces with intensive culture system. There were a total of 97 isolates from 65 diseased fish. Sixty-six isolates from 97 isolates were identified by biochemical tests. They were consisted of Edwardsiella ictaruli (58 isolates [87.9%]), Aeromonas hydrophila (2 isolates [3.03%]) and 6 unidentified isolates (9.07%). Antibiotic sensitivity test was also conducted to determine the drugs that could be used to control these two bacteria. Effective drugs that showed good sensitivity against E. ictaluri were ciprofloxacin, amoxycillin and ampicillin, florfenicol, doxycycline and oxytetracycline (in order of number of isolates that showed sensitive). Two isolates of Aeromonas hydrophila were sensitive to sulphamethoxazole, ciprofloxacin, oxytetracycline, enrofloxacin, erythromycin, sulphamethoxazole/trimethoprim, doxycycline and florfenicol.

Abstract

Family selection was applied in segregated populations of three single crosses in three different environments; low-competition environment in non-replicated honeycomb design (HC), high plant density environment (HD) and alternate environments of the first two methods (HC-HD). Each family composed of 9 S2 lines which was equally separated into 3 sets. Each set was applied into each selection environment and selfed to obtain 3 S3HC, 3 S3HD and 3 S3 HC-HD for each family. Diallel cross was applied within each set and the best recovered single cross hybrid (A/A’) of each set was testcrossed to corresponding lines within set to obtain 27 within set testcross hybrids (recovered three–way hybrids, A/A’//A’’). Simultaneously, the 9 best recovered single cross hybrids were diallel crossed to form 36 sister line crosses, (A/A’//BB’). Selection for inbred line performance per se was effective in the respective manners; under low-competition environment in non-replicated honeycomb design, alternate environments and high plant density environment. High yield lines had a tendency to render high yield hybrids. However, ranking of yield could not be used as criterion for combining ability of lines. The sister line crosses either H ? H or H ? L were equally expressed in hybrid performances.

Abstract

Sweet corn (Zea mays L.) breeding has focused on quality and agronomic traits with yield performance as second priority trait. The objective of the present study was to compare yield and to combine ability of sweet corn inbred lines selected from 3 original single crossed under different competition environments; firstly, under high plant density (0.75 ? 0.25 m); secondly, under low – competition spacing (0.866 m) in non – replicated honeycomb design; and thirdly, by alternate selection between the first 2 methods. The resulted 9 S3 family lines from each original hybrids were grouped into three line groups, totaling of 9 groups. Diallel cross was performed within each group, resulting in 27 intra – family hybrids. Simultaneously, they were crossed to a single cross, Insee2 to form 27 testcross hybrids. The results of the study showed that sweet corn inbred lines derived from selection under low – competition environment by honeycomb selection had not only higher yield but also higher combining ability compared with inbred lines derived from selection under high plant density environment and alternate selection between the first two methods. However, different sources of germplasm responded differently to the common tester.

Abstract

The effects were characterized and compared of pretreatment process conditions (boiling at different sodium chloride solutions of 0, 3, 4 and 5 % and drying at different dehydration times of 4, 5 and 6 hr) on the moisture content prior to puffing (MCP), volume expansion (VE), the moisture loss after puffing (ML), hardness and the color difference between microwave puffing (MWP) and deepoil frying puffing (DOFP). The optimal pretreatment process conditions were selected by means of response surface methodology that considered the desirability and was validated by sensory evaluation. It appeared that the addition of salt increased the MCP associated with the puffing processes. The VE and hardness were affected differently by the two techniques with the values of DOFP being better than those of MWP values in general. MWP resulted in samples with a higher lightness but a lower color intensity when compared to those of DOFP. The results suggested that gelatin together with MCP might play an important role in MWP. Although being inferior compared to DOFP at different pretreatment conditions, MWP showed some comparable efficiencies in the puffing process and sensory evaluation under the optimal conditions which consisted of boiling in 3% salt and drying for 5 hr for MWP, while for DOFP, the optimum conditions were boiling in 0.003% salt (approximately water only) and drying for 6 hr when compared to the commercial product.

Abstract

A study was conducted on a farmer’s field on a 35 % slope in the humid forest zone, Nigeria on the use of a green structure that performed some engineering functions on cultivated steep lands to help curtail soil and water losses. Treatments consisted of a vetiver grass strip as a green buffer structure at different surface spacings of 5, 15, 25 m with no vetiver as the control and were laid out in a randomized complete block design with three blocks. Twelve erosion plots each measuring 50 m long and 3 m wide were used for the study. The plots were planted with cassava and maize in a simple crop mixture. The runoff, soil loss and crop yield were assessed under the four treatments. The rainfall lost as runoff with no vetiver (control plot) was 24.8 % compared to 7.7, 11.5 and 11.6% lost on the green structure plots at spacings of 5, 15 and 25 m, respectively. Soil loss on the no vetiver plot was 40 times higher than the acceptable soil loss limit of 12 t.ha-1 yr-1 for the tropics, whereas the soil loss on plots under vetiver at spacings of 5, 15 and 25 m was 1.4, 6.8 and 6.5 times higher than the acceptable limit. The maize grain yield and the fresh cassava tuber yield were significantly lower in the control plots and highest with the 5 m spacing. A vetiver strip as a green structure was more effective at a spacing of 5 m as it reduced soil and water losses and increased crop yield. This spacing was also adequate for traditional pre- and post-farming activities.

Abstract

Soil erosion still remains the major cause of deterioration of soil physical qualities on cultivated lands worldwide. A study was carried out on erosion plots at the Teaching and Research Farm of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria to assess soil physical properties after five years of using vetiver grass buffer strips (VGBS) and organomineral fertilizer (OMF) with bare soil on which farmers had planted without soil conservation measures as the control. Samples were analyzed for water stable aggregates (WSA), mean weight diameter (MWD), bulk density, porosity and particle size distribution. The cone index (CI) was also assessed. Infiltration values were fitted to Philip’s and Kostiakov’s models. Results showed that the amount of WSA for the VGBS and OMF plots was the same (64%) and on the bare soil was 54%. The MWD on the VGBS plot was 6.11% higher than on the OMF plot and 19% higher than on bare soil. The bulk density for the bare soil was 4% higher than that of the VGBS plot. Porosity values for the VGBS and OMF plots were the same, being 8% higher than the bare soil plot. The CI was 15.7% and 7% lower on the VGBS and OMF plots, respectively, compared to the bare soil. Cumulative and initial one-minute infiltration increased by 39.4% and 35%, respectively, on the VGBS plot when compared with the bare soil. Hydraulic conductivity increased by 41.7% on the VGBS plot when compared with bare soil. The initial capacity of the soil to accept water increased on the VGBS plot by 19% over the OMF plot and 39% over the bare soil plot. The index of soil sorptivity (reflecting rate of decline of infiltration capacity) was the same for the VGBS and OMF plots and 21.78% higher than for the bare soil plot. The use of vetiver grass buffer strips on erosion-prone cultivated fields over the years could act as a source of organic fertilizer, improving soil physical properties.
