Forty-four naturally infected horses, aged 6 months to 3.10 years, and weighed 180-488 kg were randomly assigned to 2 treatment groups (0.2 mg/kg ivermectin and 6 mg/kg febantel). The anthelmintics were mixed with water and given to the horses through stomach tube. The horses were allowed to graze as usually practice. Fresh fecal samples were collected and eggs per gram (EPG) were reported by McMaster technique in the period of November 2003 ? February 2004. The anthelmintic efficacy of treatment was assessed by measuring the reduction of EPG. The results indicated that the horses had EPG reductions nearly 100% (91.4% ? 100%) during 7 weeks and still had EPG reductions of 81.9 and 70.3 during 8 and 9 weeks after given ivermectin. In contrast, the horses had EPG reductions 50% only in the first week after given febantel. The result suggested that febantel was not effective against intestinal strongyles in pre-breeding horses. The means of EPG in the horses given ivermectin were significant lower than those given febantel during 5 ? week period of study. Additionally, weekly EPGs in the horses given ivermectin were significant lower than those given febantel. After 5 weeks of febantel treatment, the horses were changed to be treated with ivermectin. The results also revealed that the horses had EPG reductions nearly 100% (96% - 100%) during 8 weeks of the next follow up. Average weights before and after treatments were not significant different. In conclusion, injectable ivermectin given through stomach tube was an effective drug to control strongyles in pre-breeding horses for 7 weeks. |
