Abstract

Ten mungbean mutant lines obtained from irradiation and chemical substances were tested against the 2 recommended varieties on resistance to the diseases and insect namely powdery mildew, Cercospora leaf spot and cowpea weevil. The 2 diseases using artificial inoculation were investigated in the greenhouse while cowpea weevil was studied under laboratory conditions. Apart from these, regional yield trial were also conducted at 7 experimental stations during the dry and rainy seasons of 1998. The investigation revealed the tested mutant lines to have potential development into new varieties. They were, M5-10 and M5-25 resistant to powdery mildew, M5-22 and M5-25 resistant to Cercospora leaf spot, M5-16 and M5- 29 resistant to cowpea weevil and the other 5 lines of M4-2, M5-1, M5-5, M5-15 and M5-28 with trend of producing good yields.

Abstract

Gamma rays of 500 Gy and the chemical mutagen, 1% ethylmethane sulphonate (EMS) were administered to induce mutation in mungbean KPS 1 and CN 36 varieties for improvement of disease resistance to cercospora leaf spot and powdery mildew as well as producing high yields. The individual plant and plant-row selections were made in M2 and M3 and in M3 and M4 of KPS 1 and CN 36 respectively. The selected characters observed were the low level of powdery mildew, pods protruding up above the canopy, early maturity, and purple-red petioles. Preliminary yield test of 27 selected lines comparing to original varieties, KPS 1 and CN 36, revealed potentiality of some lines that might be developed into good varieties. These were, M5-8 with good pod setting, M5-19 with pods protruding up above the canopy, M5-21 and M5-22 with good plant type and high pod setting, and M5-24 with early flowering. All five mutant lines possessed moderate resistance to powdery mildew as did KPS 1, while CN 36 moderate susceptibility. The controls as well as the selected lines were also moderately resistant to cercospora leaf spot. For further investigation, artificial inoculation of the pathogens in severe infection would be made in yield test so that only most resistant lines could be chosen.

Abstract

Comparison of mungbean mutant lines with the standard varieties was conducted at various stations during 1998 and 1999, RCB was employed with 4 replications. In the year 1998, 12 selected mutant lines were planted in 10 experimental plots at 7 locations and the three lines of M5-5, M5-1 and M4-2 were found to give the high yields of 243, 235 and 229 kg/rai, respectively, comparing to 213 and 228 kg/rai of KPS1 and CN36, respectively. During 1999, 12 mutant lines were planted in 6 plots at 5 locations and it was found that M5-10, M4-2, M5-5 and M5-22 gave yields of 240, 240, 236 and 232 kg/rai, respectively, while KPS1 and CN36 gave 227 and 232 kg/rai, respectively. Whereas the highest yield was obtained from M5-5 in 1998, it was M4-2 in 1999. The 2 year-tests resulted in the selection of M5-5, M5-1 and M4-2 for further comparing study with the standard varieties in the farmers’ fields.
