Abstract

Biological Wastewater treatment efficiency of EM ( a mixed culture produced by Sei Kai Kuesei Kyo foundation) was compared with the mixed cultures taken from an oxidation pond treating domestic wastewater for removal nutrients in a domestic wastewater, an artificial sewage, and an artificial starch wastewater. An experiment was conducted in a batch system. It was found that the microorganisms from EM could grow and removed COD, nitrogen compounds, and phosphate in all kinds of the wastewaters. However, its ability was not better than the mixed cultures from the oxidation pond.

Abstract

The effect of Effective Microorganism (EM) on the changes of water quality in the tangerine growing area was investigated. Samplings of water (pre-entry and in-orchard0 from orchards engaged with EM and conventional chemical treatments were collected. The period of sample taking was during April 1994 to March 1995. Analysis on pH, conductivity, Na, Cl-, So=4, hardaness, alkalinity, NH3-N, NO2-N, NO3-N, P, K, Ca, Mb, Fe, Mn Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, and Cr were carried out at monthly interval. Results of the study indicated that pre-entry water was good for agricultural purposes and had no significant differences. In-orchard water was high in minerals during the rainy period but moderately good for agricultural purposes. There was no significant differences on the average of most parameters throughout the year. However, EM-engaged orchard gave lower pH reading while NO3-N was higher when compared to the conventional chemical treated orchard. Sanitary aspects on COD, BOD, total solid. Total count and coliform bacteria were undertaken on every other month. The quality of the pre-entry water was not qualified for consumption. The quality of the in-orchard water was slightly reduced and not qualified for consumption either. The average of all parameters were not significant different.
