Abstract

Freshly harvested Chinese kales (Brassica oleracea var. acephala. D.C .) were packed in plastic baskets or in polyethyiene (PE) bags and held at 1?C, 5?C,10?C as well as under room temperature (29(?C). It was found that Chinese kales placed in sealed PE bags at 1?C for 25 days was still fresh and was accepted in appearance, with a decrease in ascorbic acid content from 119.3 mg/lGO g fresh weight at the beginning of the treatment to 79.0 mg/100 g fresh weight at the end of the storage. Chlorophyll content was non-significantly change during the storing time. Changes in titratable acidity and weight loss were gndetectable. Based on changes in chlorophyll, ascorbic acid and weight loss, Chinese kales in both plastic baskets and sealed PE bags held at 5?C and 10?C for 25 days, deteriorated at a more rapid rate as compared to Chinese kales held at 1?C. At room temperature. Chinese kales placed in plastic baskets and sealed PE bags was unmarketable within 2 and 4 days. respectively.

Abstract

Chiang Mai-grown broccoli was bought and shipped to Bangkok by truck within 30 hours. Broccoli was stored at 3 temperatures; room temperature (31 C) 1 and 4C under the following conditions: plastic basket, unsealed plastic bag and sealed plastic bag without and with adding 10% Co2. Storage life of broccoli held in sealed plastic bags with initial 10% Co2 at 1 and 4C could be extended up to 28 days and broccoli still remained green and fresh like newly harvested vegetable and it could be stored further. It is therefore strongly recommended that broccoli be stored at 4-5C in plastic bags with initial 10% CO2

Abstract

The effects of temperature and modified atmosphere on Brussels sprouts (Brassica oleracea var. gemmifera) were studied in relation to their quality and storage life. Brussels sprouts in plastic baskets lost their weight and chlorophyll very rapidly at room temperature (31'C) while weight losses of those in sealed plastic bags were almost completely stopped but chlorophyll loss still took place. Chlorophyll loss was delayed at low temperature. High temperature caused Brussels sprouts in sealed plastic bags to develop internal browning and off-oder, and added CO2 in sealed plastic bags increased the severity of disorders but had no effect at low temperature (1? and 5?C). Brussels sprouts in plastic baskets deteriorated very rapidly and had storage life only 3 days while those in sealed plastic bags and held at 1?C had storage life up to 5 weeks.

Abstract

Asparagus spears from Hoob-Ka-Pong Agricultural Cooperative were measured for their size and analyzed for their fiber content. The results indicated that diameter of white spear was 14.6 mm. with 16.7 cm long, while grade A, B and C of the green spear was 10.7, 7.3 and 5.9 mm. with 29.7, 29.4 and 30.2 cm long, respectively. The fiber content of white spear, green spear with grade A, B and C was 1.52, 0.68, 0.94, and 1.29 percent, respectively. The results also indicated that the fiber content was lowest at the distal end and increased steadily to the basal end.

Abstract

Harvesting indices of Nam Dokmai Mango was studied in relation to fruit setting date, total soluble soilds: citric acid ratio fruit firmness. specific gravity and heat unit. It was found that total soluble solids; citric acid ratio gradually increased while fruit firmness gradually decreased as the mango fruit became more mature. It was suggested that fruit setting date, total soluble solids; citric acid ratio, fruit firmness, specific gravity and heat unit may be used as the harvesting index for Nam Dokmai mango. The best quality of Nam Dokmai mango should be harvested during 99-111 days after fruit set. The mango fruit harvested during this period had total soluble solids; citric acid ratio of 6.01-10.10. fruit firmness of 12.30-9.60 pounds. specific gravity of 1.03-1.04 and heat unit of 850.2-1.002.7 CDD. The ripe fruit had total soluble solids: citric acid ratio more than 16 flesh color was 10 YR 8/10 moderate orange yellow and B-caratene content was between 3.498-4. 788 ug per 100 gram fresh weight.

Abstract

The study on fruit development of longkong (Aglaia dookoo Griff.) was carried out at Bhannara orchard in Su-nghaipadee district, Narathiwat province during April to September 1982. Experimental data showed that over 95% of fruit had 5 carpels. The growth curve from fruit set until maturity was in the single sigmoidal form, and the growth period was 14 weeks. The fruit shape during the growth period up to 13 weeks was global, and changed to spherical appearance a week after. The rind thickness increased after fruit set to the ninth week, then decreased slightly until maturity. The percentage of soluble solids (SS) in fruit juice increased gradually decreased until the fruit became mature with 1% of titratable acids (TA) at week 15. Soluble solids/titratable acids ratio at the week 15 was 18.1. The harvesting period is recommended during week 14 to 16 after fruit set.

Abstract

Market quality of small pod type sugar pea was studied during January – April 1982. The pea which was obtained from wholesalers and farms and farms in Chiang Mai consisted of tenderly immature, optimally mature and over mature pods. They were <0.5, 0.5-0.75 and >0.75 cm thick; and weighed 1.5-2.0 >2.0-2.5 and >2.5-3.0 g/pod. The over mature ones yielded a recovery of approximately 50% edible Seeds. It was noted that the 10 samples had an average of tenderly immature and optimally mature pods, over mature and damaged pods of 71.5, 22.9 and 5.5 %, respectively.

Abstract

Head lettuce was harvested and left overnight in shacks at production sites. The next morning, they were trimmed and individually wrapped with proof paper either with or without plastic bag and packed in crates and ASEAN high density polyethylene (HDPE) containers. Head lettuce without trimming of wrapper leaves was also packed in crates. They were then shipped to the Royal Project Office, Chiang Mai, Province, within the same day, trimmed head letture in crates was transferred into 5-kg cartons and untrimmed head lettuce was unpacked, trimmed and repacked in bamboo baskets. Head lettuce was then shipped to Bangkok by truck in the same evening. Upon arrival in the next morning at Postharvest Laboratory, Department of Horticulture, Kasetsart University, Bangkok. it was found that individually wrapped head lettuce either with or without plastic bag in both cartons and ASEAN HDPE containers was in excellent condition. while head lettuce without wrapping in bamboo baskets showed a considerable weight loss and shrivel leaves had to be removed resulti~lg more weight loss. Tipburn was found to contribute a large percentage of postharvest losses in one lot of head lettuce and this seems to be related to rapid growth of the plant. Strict practice of quality control resulted in good quality of the produce at the destination.

Abstract

Due to the unavailability of appropriate papaya fruit which is borne on a tall tree and cannot be reached by hands creates harvesting problem. Design, tests and fabric cations of the picker with metals, canvas and nylon net were done at home and elsewhere. The finally fabricated picker looks like a big old time coffee strainer bag with a protrusion which is for breaking the pedical. This gadget which is suitable for local papaya is strong, durable and weighs 800 g. However, its weight may be modified to accommodate fruit varieties. The picker works satisfactorily on trees perpendicular to the ground. One person is simply able to carry out the operation.

Abstract

Location Effect on Strawberry Quality1 Suraphong Kosiyachinda, Manit Kosittrakul , Peeradet Tongumpai, Saichol Ketsa and Viehit vangnai2 ABSTRACT Tioga strawberries were harvested on March 19 - 22,1983 from 3 different growing areas. They were Chang Kian, Intanon and Mae Sai. The study was conducted daily and shortly after harvest. Right after harvest strawberries of Intanon had over 2% SS higher than those of the other two areas with 5.65 and 5.14%. They were highly significantly different. The TA were 0.75 - 0.95% in both stages. It was not statistically different within the same stage. Similar pattern was found in full color fruits and SSITA ratios. Flesh firmness of Intanon strawberries was 2.16 kglcm2 in the first day. It was firmer than that of Chang Kian and Mae Sai, but at full color stage their values were slightly different (1.04 - 1.29 kg/cm2). Data indicate that Tioga strawberries from higher elevation areas tend to have slightly better quality. It was confirmed by organoleptic test. However the fruits have their own characteristic of low % SS and comparably high % TA. The taste is not palatable, if strawberries are eaten as they are without any seasoning.

Abstract

This report summarizes the findings of the final phase of the Nam Pong project. The objecttive of this project have been (i) for developing quantitative assessment arising from the construction.and operation of the Nam Pong dam in 1964. (ii) for planning and for actual management of resource in the basin.The second objective is the main theme of this report. this study was composed of three phases. Phase I represented a comprehensive data collection effort comprising an extensive literature review. a reconnaissance survey of the basin."a post audit" of socio-economic aspects and preparation of an annotated bibiography Phase II was assentially a fact finding exercise to identify ecological changes mainly through field data collection. this final phase commenced in 1980 was hybird exercise of transferring an integrate management methodology to a group of Thai scientist and of applying such methodology to the case of Nam Pong basin's resource management. The most important final products that emerged form this exercise were (i) a management oriented "an integrated simulation model" taken into account four main basic subsystems-land,water. fish and socio-economic and (ii) An identification or institutional structure and the constraints affecting management of basin resources, and resolution recommended.

Abstract

Tioga strawberries of 4 different-colored stages were harvested from Intonon area in the cooler month of December. 1982. Their quality criteria were determined right after sorting at the lntanon Station. The remaining berries were air-shipped to lab in Bangkok for study at daily interval. Another batch of different stages of berries similar to the December crop was studied in the warmer month of March, 1983. It was found that after harvest all strawberries developed color rapidly. those of 21 -40% red color when harvested deloped color to an acceptable condition of over 90%) color within 2 days. The March crop had a slightly faster rate of color development, it is faster than the December crop by approximately half a day. More advanced stage of strawberries. the 61-80% colerl in the December harvest had higher SS than others by only 1 .O'%. Those of March had slightly lower SS than the December by about 0.5% The younger stage of 0-20% color strawberries tended to have higher acid content than other stages in the cooler month crop. Their difference in this respect between the two months was less than 0.0:3% in favor of the hotter month. The SS/ TA ratios of the cooler month strawberries are higher than those of the warmer month by lo;. It is suggested along the support of organoleptic evaluation that strawberries of above 41% color of either months possessed acceptable eating quality right after harvest. The younger stage of 21-40% color needed 3 days after harvest to attain such quality. Strawberries are firmer in the younger stages. They also had greater firmness in the cool month crop. Four days after harvest fruit firmness of the cool and hot month crops was different by 0.55 to 0.86 kg/cm2. Weight losses increased in relation with time. On the third day after harvest. the losses amounted to 6% for the December crop. while that for the warmer month was 9%. The apparent losses were fruit losses due to mechanical and biological injuries. The former factor played a bigger role due to human problems which could be alleviated with "Tender Loving Care" practices.

Abstract

The effect of temperature and CO2 on postharvest changes in fiber content of green spears of asparagus was studied. Asparagus spears were purchased from Hoob-Ka-Pong Agricultural Cooperative, Amphur Cha-um, Petchaburi province and shipped by truck in foam boxes with contact icing. The spears were stored in plastic baskets, folded plastic bags and sealed plastic bags which were added with CO2 at initial concentrations of 0 (no CO2 adding), 5, 10 and 20% and held at 1?C (62% RH), 5?C(64% RH), 9 ?C (68% RH) and room temperature (27.8 ?C and 71.8% RH). The results showed that lower temperatures and higher concentrations of CO2 retarded the increment of fiber content. The spears stored in 10 and 20% CO2 at 1 ?C had storage life of 40 days while spears in plastic baskets at room temperature had storage life of 2 days.
