Abstract

Three levels of nitrogen at 60, 90 and 120 kg/ha from green leaf manure of Leucaena leucocephala and Gliricidia sepium were compared with nitrogen at 60 kg/ha from urea and control (without nitrogen) for growing rice (Oryza sativa), variety Suphan Buri 90 under irrigated condition at Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand during January to June, 1995. The purpose of conducting the experiment was to sort out the effect of green leaf manure on yield components of rice as well as to find out the change in plant N content, residual impact of green leaf manure on soil N content and pH and to know their ability to completely substitute chemical N to rice. The results revealed that application of green leaf manure N at 120 kg/ha from both of Leucaena and Gliricidia produced yield and agronomical components of rice similar to that obtained from N at 60 kg/ha from urea. The result also concluded that green leaf manure N at 120 kg/ha could completely substitute N at 60 kg/ha from urea and green leaf manure coulf be used in the form of top dressing. There was significant increase in yields off rice due to the use of green leaf manure. However, the increase in grain yield over vontrol treatment in green leaf manure treated plots was from 19-49%. There was positive relation with grain yield in components of effective tillers per hill, number of filled grains per panicle, 1000 grain weight, number of panicle per square meter, biomass yield and straw yield.

Abstract

The effect of three types of organic manures, its combination within and with chemical fertilizer was studied under the nylon net house. A lettuce cultivar of ‘Green Fancy’ was grown during December, 2002, February and April 2003. The same amount of nitrogen from organic manures and chemical fertilizers was applied to the experimental plots for each crop. Cow dung (CD), chicken manure (CM) and duck manure (DM) were applied 4.5, 4.7 and 5.8 t/ha, respectively, contributing 81 kg nitrogen each. In the case of combination treatments each combination contributed 1:1 ratio of nitrogen. A treatment with recommended dose of chemical fertilizer (CF) providing 81 kg nitrogen was also included. The crop grown with 4.7 t/ha of CM alone and its combination with CF (2.35 ton CM plus 156 kg complete fertilizer i.e., 15-15-15 together with 82 kg/ha of ammonium sulfate) gave a significantly higher yield throughout the crop season. Combination treatments within organic manures did not establish any statistical significance. In spite of the differences in total yield, fiber content and dry matter percentage showed not significant results irrespective of treatments and crop seasons.

Abstract

A field experiments was conducted at the Central Experiment Station of the University of the Philippines at Los Ba n? os to evaluate mixed variety cultivation as productivity-enhancing and costsaving strategies for maize production. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with factorial arrangement of treatments in three replications. The variety DK 909, a hybrid was substituted with USM var 5, an open pollinated variety (OPV) of maize. Mixed variety cultivation involved mixed stands of hybrid and open pollinated variety planted in single plant and double plants per hill. Two maize varieties currently grown in commercial scale in the Philippines were used in the study. Seed substitution significantly influenced grain yield. Nevertheless, there was no effect of interaction between seed substitution x number of plants per hill. Likewise, the differences in 100-grain weight, grain weight per plant, ear diameter, ear length, percentage of ear fill, and shelling recovery were not significant. Grain yield from the mixed stands of 75:25 and 50:50 in between hybrid and OPV were comparable with that of the pure stand of the hybrid. Substituting 75% of the recommended seed rate of the hybrid with OPV, however, resulted in significantly lower grain yield by 1,565 kg/ha. However, plant and ear heights were significantly affected by the interaction between seed substitution level x number of plants/hill. Simple regression analysis showed that grain weight per plant and percentage of ear fill accounted for 39% and 30% of the variations in grain yield, respectively. Therefore the study suggested that hybrid seed substitution could be done by OPV up to 50% levels in the subsistence agriculture. Economic analysis for cost and benefit showed that gross return was slightly higher in the pure stand of hybrid than that of 75:25 mixed stands of hybrid and OPV. The pure stand of the OPV gave the lowest gross return, cost of seeds, and return above variable cost.
