This research aimed to develop the Ontological Commitment Model for research initiative and to assert the effectiveness of this model for quality improvement in a nursing college in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Quality Improvement Research was applied and used card sorting and ontological analysis tools on the conceptual framework in order to practically transform routine work into research opportunities under a compulsory educational quality model. To gain research initiatives, keywords were extracted that related to the Baldridge Quality Model which encompasses organizational profile, leadership, strategic planning, customer focus, measurement, analysis, knowledge management, workforce focus, operation focus, and results. The research direction of the nursing college was used to extract keywords from the current Thai National Government guidelines, and the specialty or interests of knowledge workers from six participants who had no experience in research and the head of a research team who had more than three years experience were recruited in this study. The results revealed that the Ontological Commitment Model using card sorting can help participants more rapidly achieve research initiatives than their prior experiences. The findings showed quality improvement in the research received from ontological commitment significantly helped staff to reduce their working time in routine work and to undertake research efficiently, to increase success in designing conceivable plans that integrated teaching and conducting research, and to raise their Baldridge quality scores. In particular, the benefits included an increment in the number and quality of submitted research projects and improved faculty research capacity. Increased research productivity will support the college’s academic operation as a center of excellence in addiction studies. |

The Bresse chicken cluster managed by the Royal Project Foundation was selected as a case study due to its high potential. The actors, their roles and benefits as well as the performance of the cluster to help farmers overcome constraints and enhance abilities to compete in the market were investigated. Data were collected from the reports of the Royal Project Foundation and from stakeholders by using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The results from the study showed that the outputs of the cluster are not just an increase in farmers’ income, but also the achievement of capabilities. The major success factors for long term clustering are the presence of a strong functioning network and partnership among the stakeholders. These result from the platform opening for vision sharing and research being conducted by the stakeholders, the personality traits and competencies of a cluster engineer, and the equality of benefits provided to stakeholders involved in the cluster. Continual knowledge support from academic organizations as well as good functioning of knowledge sharing in the cluster are also key success factors. |

However, the existing capability of the grower resulting from education is a major obstacle to the full utilization of daily agricultural processes. Consequently, costs and risks associated with agricultural business cannot be effectively managed. This paper presents an alternative sustainable agricultural framework to assist the grower with managing costs and risk management through an improvement in grower capability. A maturity model is applied and developed into a Grower Maturity Model where an increased maturity level translates into better management of costs and risks. Since knowledge plays an important role in capability improvement, a specific learning framework in agricultural business is also developed to represent the relationship between learning and costs and risks. The results show that costs in agricultural processes can be sustainably and effectively reduced through better knowledge and an increase in the capability level of growers. Ten okra growers in Samut Sakhon province exporting to Japan are used as case studies. |
