Abstract

An indirect boundary element method was applied to calculate a potential flow around an oblate spheroid. The computed results for flow velocities were compared with analytical results. The accuracy of the computed results was quite good.

Abstract

The development of 2.0 web applications and the need to transform higher technical and vocational education (HTVE) in order to respond positively in a global market demand for an “ICT-capable” workforce underlines the importance of identifying and profiling the roles of ICT-based career information (CI) to HTVE programs. Therefore, this paper observed, digested, and extracted from the existing literature on the application of ICTs in the provision of CI, specific concepts that can make a significance contribution to HTVE programs. Specifically, the paper discussed the literature on career information that has a significant relationship with HTVE, due to its peculiar characteristics that are different from other areas of specialization. Several documents were consulted and scrutinized; information was extracted explaining the topic under discussion. The documents used included: textbooks, journals articles, conceptual papers, and technical reviews, which were downloaded through the A-Z online databases of the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) library. It was found that ICT-based career information is of great benefit to students of HTVE in providing information about: (a) the current trend in the world of work, (b) the knowledge and skills requirement for various jobs, (c) how to match skills with jobs and (d) updating labor market information (LMI). The paper concludes that HTVE institutions should apply ICT tools in order to give students and career counselors a sense of continuity with regard to current happenings in their area of specialization.

Abstract

Several experiments were carried out to establish an efficient regenerating protocol for cultivated eggplant varieties. Among the five varieties cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium with free plant growth regulator (PGR), Nayantara performed better considering the number of shoots/explant (2.48). Considering explant types and culture conditions, better performance was observed (3.68 shoots/ explant) when seed germination in the dark was proceeded by bottom hypocotyl segments cultured under dark conditions. A higher rate of shoot regeneration was observed in Nayantara when cultured in Zeatin Riboside (ZR) and Thidizuron (TDZ) supplemented MS medium. The highest number of shoots per explant was produced on MS medium supplemented with 2.0 mg/L ZR and 0.1 mg/L indole acetic acid (6.65 shoots/explant). Proliferation and elongation of the regenerated shoots were obtained in the MS medium with free PGR. The best rooting performance was observed in MS medium supplemented with 2.0 mg/L indole butyric acid. Plantlets with well developed roots and shoots were successfully transferred to soil.

Abstract

The effect of gamma irradiation was determined on the microbiological quality and amino acid profile of edible bird nest (EBN) powder. Seven doses of irradiation were used: 0.0 (control), 1.0, 2.0, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0, 20.0 and 30.0 kGy. The total plate count (TPC) of EBN samples that were inhibited or had TPC < 100 colony forming units (CFU).g-1 at 20.0 kGy was determined. An irradiation dose of 5.0 kGy was required to reduce the coliform and Staphylococcus aureus counts to below 100 CFU.g-1 and the yeast and mold counts to below 1,000 CFU.g-1, while for Escherichia coli, 1.0 kGy was sufficient to inhibit or reduce the count to below 100 CFU.g-1. Salmonella spp. was not detected in any sample. A minimum irradiation dose of 20 kGy was required to sterilize the EBN powder samples most effectively. The pH and water activity values of the samples were in the ranges 8.34–8.90 and 0.621–0.674, respectively. The microbiological quality changes of irradiated samples were caused by the gamma irradiation alone. Gamma irradiation at doses as high as 10.0 and 20.0 kGy did not produce significant changes in the amino acid profiles of the EBN samples compared to the non-irradiated samples. Gamma irradiation improved the microbiological quality of the EBN samples without affecting their amino acid profiles.

Abstract

The alarming population growth rate in Pakistan has exacerbated the food security problem. The increase in the human population (3%) in the last two decades has nullified increased cereal production. The use of maize in the feed and wet milling industry is growing at a much larger pace than anticipated. Maize is being grown on an area of 1.016 million hectares with annual production of 3.037 million tons and an average grain yield of 2,864 kg/ha. Approximately 66% of the maize in Pakistan has access to irrigation; the remainder is farmed under strictly rain-fed conditions. Maize production in Pakistan has increased from 0.38 million tons during 1947-50 to 3.037 million tons in 2007. The trend is likely to continue at a much faster pace in the years to come. The adoption/cultivation of spring maize has increased, especially since the active involvement of multinationals in Pakistan. Today spring maize accounts for 12-15% of the total area and almost 30-35% of the total annual production. An annual increase of 20-25% in the maize area during spring has been observed, which is mainly because of very good yield levels (6-7 tons/ha). Spring maize is one of the success stories in Pakistani agriculture. Seed has been, and still is, the most important limiting factor in maize production in Pakistan. Only 34% improved seed is available. The markets are not stable and have uncertainty due to the lack of drying and grain storage facilities. The use of maize grain in poultry feed is on the increase in Punjab province up from 23% in 2001 to 55% in 2007.
