Abstract

Mature male pupae of cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera, from laboratory culture were irradiated at 0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 Gy with dose rate of 33.6 Gy/min in 60 Co gamma irradiator. The results were found to have 99.17, 97.50, 98.75, 97.92 and 99.06% moth emergence, 1.56, 3.54, 2.91, 5.39 and 8.33% moth deformation, 13.35, 10.20, 9.45, 11.65 and 11.10 days longevity of P1 moths, 27.04, 30.49, 33.12, 48.84 and 62.73% sterility of P1 moths respectively. Effects of radiation on F1 progeny showed that survival of the immature stages of F1 progeny significantly decreased with increasing doses irradiated to P1 male and the sex ratio of the F1 progeny was significantly skewed in favor of males. Longevity of F1 male moths from male parents irradiated as mature pupae at 0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 Gy were 29.00, 26.13, 24.90, 26.35 and 22.55 days while those of F1 female moths were 17.60, 18.00, 17.55, 17.15 and 17.19 days respectively. Fecundity of F1 female moths was not significantly different but the sterility of F1 progeny was significantly different compared with untreated moths. The sterility of F1 male moths were 26.17, 52.77, 92.1, 96.84, 100.00% while those of F1 female moths were 26.17, 52.75, 84.76, 98.91 and 100.00% respectively.

Abstract

Effects of gamma radiation at various doses on eggs, larvae, pupae and adults of azuki bean weevil, Callosobruchus chinensis (L.) were studied. It was found that there were no significant differences between percent egg mortalities at 40 and 80 Gy and among 120, 160 and 180 Gy. As for the larvae, percent mortalities at all doses were significantly different from that of the control. Significant differences were also found among tested doses from that of the control in percent pupal mortality. After 4 and 7 days of irradiation, percent adult mortalities were found to be significantly different from those of the control at every dose. No significant differences were found among percent mortalities at all tested doses between 4 and 7 days. Percent sterilities at 100 and 120 Gy were not significantly different. When untreated male mating with treated female, there were significant differences in fecundity from the control and from among one another. In treated larvae at 100, 300 and 500 Gy, of all doses the degrees of melanization decreased with the increasing dose. The percent phenoloxidase (PO) activities of the treated larvae reduced compared with that of the control.

Abstract

The effect of gamma irradiation on fruit fly pupae of Bactrocera correcta, from a 137Cs source at various doses was investigated under laboratory conditions. The results indicated that the percentages of adult emergence, adult abnormality and male longevities were not significantly different from one another at 0, 5, 10, 15 and 30 Gy, while the sterilities of unirradiated and irradiated males were 23.85, 21.78, 59.10, 72.57 and 98.34%, respectively. Percent sterility at 5 Gy was not significantly different from the control (0 Gy). The investigation showed that mating competitiveness of the males when irradiated at 30 Gy was almost equal to that of the untreated males. The total competitiveness values of treated males were estimated to range from 1.45 to 2.09 for the three different ratios (male:normal male:normal female) of 1:1:1, 1:0:1 and 3:1:1. Observation of the melanization of the treated larvae after killing by freezing indicated that the larval color appeared to range from black to creamy white (from 0 to 30 Gy), with the degree of melanization decreasing with increasing doses. Total haemocyte counts (THCs) of the irradiated 1st instar larvae and observed in the 3rd instar larvae at 0, 5, 10, 15 and 30 Gy averaged 3,150, 2,200, 700, 550 and 350 h/mm3, respectively. The THCs at every dose were noticed to be significantly different from that of the control.
