Abstract

Total count of fungi in EM product lot 1, lot 2, and lot 3, at the period of 0, 8 and 16 weeks were made on PDA and martin “s medium. The results showed that total number of fungi in each EM product were 103-104 CFU/ml. Number of fungi in EM product lot 3 were lower than the others. Number of fungi at each level of EM product, surface, middle and bottom of the containers were not different. Number of fungi at 16 weeks showed tendensy to decrease. Number of fungi on PDA and Martin’s medium were not different. From the identification of fungi isolates showed that Aspergillus niger, Penicillium (light green) Penicillium (gray) and Penicillium (green and wrinkly) were found in all 3 lots of EM products. Aspergillus fumigatus, A. flavipes and Rhizopus were found only in EM product lot 1. Emericella (white), Emericella (creamy white) and Fusarium were found in EM product lot2 and 3 while Penicillium (grayish green) and Aspergillus flavus were found only in EM product lot 2 and Aspergillus oryzae only in EM product lot3. Study on the viability of each fungi in each EM product were made. The result showed that in EM product lot 1 only Penicillium (light green) and Penicillium (gray) were present until 16 weeks. In EM product lot2, Emericella (white) and Emericella (creamy white) were found and increased in 8 and 16 weeks. EM. lot 3 only Emericella (white) was found and increased until 16 weeks.

Abstract

The effect of EM 5 on African red mite, Eutetranychus africanus (Tucker) Citrus rust mite, Phyllocoptruta oleivora (Ashamead) and Citrus yellow mite, Eotetranychus cendanai (Rimando) were examined in the laboratory of Entomology and Zoology Division. This study was made to determine the possibility of developing some effective microorganisms to control the important citrus mites. The EM 5 mixture including30% ethyl alcohol, acetic acid and molasses were diluted with water into 5 concentrations : 100, 75. 50, 25 and 12.5%. The pure mixture excluded EM and a recommended acaricide, propargite 0.045% were included to test the toxicity on these as well. All treatments were evaluated by use of the leaf disc-dip technique. The residual actions on mite mortality were determined 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours after treated. Excluded the errors of this experiment, the result would conducted on 48 hours after treated, The mite mortality treated with propargite 0.045% was one hundred percentage which was non significantly different from mixture plus EM 100% and mixture without EM 100%. Because the 100% mixture with and without EM gave the some effect on mite mortality, the result was concluded that the toxicity to mite was not caused by EM. They might be killed due to the compounds in mixture, such as acetic acid, ethyl alcohol or due to the very high sticky of molasses.

Abstract

This pot experiment was performed in order to show the effect of EM and rhizobial inoculation on growth and yield of soybean. The design of the experiment was randomized complete block with 9 treatments and each treatment with eight replications. Soil and Soybean used were Korat Series soil at the rate of 30 kg/pot S.J.5. variety, respectively. The treatments were as follows: (1) without inoculations either of EM or rhizobium. (control) (2) with sterilized EM inoculation. (3) with EM inoculation (4) with rhizobial inoculation (5) with N-fertilization at the rate of 20 kg.N/rai (6) with rhizobial inoculation and sterilized EM inoculation. (7) with EM and rhizobial inoculation (8) with N-fertilization at the rate of 20 kg N/rai and sterilized EM inoculation. (9) with N-fertilization at the rate of 20 kg N/rai and EM inoculation. The results of the experiment showed that the number of nodules and efficiency on nitrogen fixation of soybeans of all treatments with rhizobial inoculation were highest and significantly different from those without rhizobial inoculation. EM inoculation with or without being sterilized gave no different effects on nodulation, nitrogen fixation efficiency and yield of soybeans when compared with the control. Dry weight of soybean from treatments with rhizobial inoculation and with N-fertilization was increased significantly when compared with that from treatments with EM inoculation with or without having been sterilized.

Abstract

Effective Microorganism or EM is widely distributed to the farmers with diversity application purposes. The experiment was conducted at Soil Microbiology Research Group. Division of Soil Science to obtain the effect of EM on the growth and nitrogen fixation efficiency of Blue Green Algae (BGA). Five species of BGA, Nostoc sp., Calothrix sp., Tolypothrix sp., A. siamensis and A. royzae were cultured in N-free nutrient solution (BG11) containing EM at the concentration of 0, 150, 300 and 600 ppm, respectively. Dry biomass, ARA and chlorophyll content were estimated as growth and nitrogen fixing efficiency parameter of BGA. Results found that the growth and nitrogen fixation of BGA in EM solution at the concentrations of 150 and 300 ppm were better than control. The growth reduction was found at the concentration of EM upper than 300 ppm.

Abstract

The preliminary studies on the effectiveness of EM for controlling the major insect pests of chinese kale such as: Diamond back moth (Plutella xylostella (Linn.)), Beet army worm (Spodoptera exigua (Hubner)). Cabbage looper (Trichoplusia ni Hubner) and Leaf esting beetle (Phyllotreta sinuate Steph.). The studies were vonducted in farmer’s chinese kale plot at amphur Thamoung, Kanchanburi province, during August-December 1993. Randomized Complete block design with four treatments and five replications were carried out at the different rates of EM. The results from the two trials was confirmarily showed by the same result as EM was not effective to control the four species of insect pests in chinese kale plot which mentioned above. As well as the quality yield of chinese kale and the percentage of infestation in the tested plot showed to significantly different when compared with the untreated plot.

Abstract

The Effectiveness of EM for controlling asian citrus psyllid. Diaphorina citri Kuwayama was conducted at Entomology and Zoology Division, Department of Agriculture during August to December 1994. The EM was tested for its insecticidal and repellent properties on the 2nd and 3rd nymphal stages. The experiment consisted of 4 treatments : including 1.) spraying with mixed solution of molasses, ethyl alcohol, acetic acid, EM and Water (ratio 1:1:1:1:10, at 15 days fermentation) 2.) spraying with the mixed solution as same as above but without EM 3.) spraying with water only and 4.) untreated. The result showed that after spraying 3 days, psyllid nymphs in all treatments were not be killed and they also develops into the next growing stage. Moreover, EM had on property on repellent to the asian citrus psyllid. It was concluded that EM was not effective in controlling asian citrus psyllid.

Abstract

EM maker claimed that EM is a solution of mixed culture of effective microorganisms capable of usefulness for the production of agricultural and forest products. It helps to control the balance of the environment I nature. It has also been used as a drink for some diseases remedy. It also consists of some Actinomycetes among the other microorganisms harboured in EM. Research on this group of bacteria was thus conducted with special attention to 2 important genera namely Actinomyces sp. and Streptomyces sp. In a pure culture isolation process used to determine for the Actinomyces sp., 3 samples of EM were done by using 2 selective media, but found no growth of this bacterial type. When these samples were tested for the Streptomyces sp. on Nutrient Agar. Sodium Caseinate Agar, Soil Extract Agar and Yeast-Extract Malt Extract Agar, a Streptomyces sp. was found to harbour with the sample designated as No.2 but confined only on Soil Extract Agar and Yeast Extract Malt Extract Agar, whose average total count was 8,502 CFU/ml. where as it was absent in sample No.1 and No.3. A pure culture isolation method was further conducted with this found genus which later revealed that it comprised of 6 isolates, designated as EM-STR 001, 002, 003, 004, 005 and 006. These isolated differed form one another in morphology and physiological activities when their characterizations were made by using the method of Bergey’s Manual of Bacteriology. The 6 isolates were further studied for their digesting abilities on filter paper, the results of which revealed that only 2 isolates i.e., EM-STR 001 and 005 could digest filter papers comparable with the digesting ability of Aspergillus niger (FPase = 0.034 U/ml) i.e., 0.030 U/ml respectively. Inhibition effects of the 6 isolates on the growth of Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Asperggillus niger were also studied which found that only one isolate i.e., EM-STR 004 could inhibit the growth of Bacillus cereus as evidenced by inhibition zone of 1.5 cm. Other isolates could not inhibit any of the organisms tested.
