The increase in oxidation-reduction potential and TRO of the effluents was significantly higher when higher dosages of ozone were applied. Treatment of shrimp pond effluent with ozone at the dosages of 0.034 and 0.073 mg/l/min resulted in complete removal of BOD within 48 h. A longer treatment period of 144 h was needed to remove all the BOD of the effluent at a lower ozone dosage of 0.017 mg/l/min. The highest percentage of total organic carbon (27.5-38.2%) removal was observed within a period of 4 h. Subsequently, the removal rate of total organic carbon was significantly lower. Bromate was detected at 120 h in the effluent treated with 0.017 mg/l/min of ozone. At higher ozone dosages of 0.034 and 0.073 mg/l/min bromate was detected at 72 h. Concentrations of bromate were between 0.0001 and 0.0006 mg/l which were lower than maximum allowable concentration in the WHO standard. |

CBOD5 of the effluents were 51-2 to 86.9 percent of ultimate CBOD. Rate of biochemical oxidation (k) of shrimp pond effluents varied between 0.06 and 0.18 per day with an average k value of 0.12. Nitrification oxygen demand of shrimp pond effluents varied between 0 and 1.0 mg/1 at 5 days, 0.4 and 22.9 mg/1 at 10 days and 13.4 and 38.2 mg/1 at 20 days. Combined oxygen demand of shrimp pond effluents varied between 9.3 and 34.0 mg/1 at 5 days, 20.4 and 64.6 mg/1 at 10 days, and 28.0 and 80.0 mg/1 at 20 days. At 20 days, nitrification oxygen demand were 29.0 to 61.8 percent of combined oxygen demand. Results of laboratory scale investigation indicated that aeration can significantly increase reduction rate of BOD5 of shrimp pond eftluents. |

The effluents discharged into recieving water containing 11.6-251.0 mg/1 of total suspended solid. Biochemical oxygen demand of the effluents were between 2.5 and 60.5 mg/1. Phosphorus content varied from 0 to 0.1018 mg/1 as P for soluble orthophosphate and from 0.0069 to 0.7236 mg/1 for total phosphate. Ammonia nitrogen concentration in the effluents were between .0021 and .8676 mg/1. Nitrate nitrogen was found in low concentration between 0 and 0.0263 mg/1 as N. However, the accumulation of nitrite in the effluents were recorded in certain sampling period with the highest concentration of 0.4094 mg/1 as N. The effluents had pH between 7.1 and 8.9, dissolved oxygen between 2.8 and 13.8 mg/1, salinity between 9 and 36 ppt, and turbidity between 2 and 68 NTU |
