Abstract

A study was made on sex expression of papaya plants treated with NAA and GA3 . The results showed that NAA treatment reduced the proportion of male plants compared with those treated with the control treatment, but this chemical did not change the relative proportion of female and hermaphroditic plants,The GA3 treatment did not alter the proportion of male, female and hermaphroditic plants. However, the maleness character appeared before the other two sex categories. Other effects of the growth regulators were on the vegetative and reproductive growth. The NAA treatment resulted in the expression of epinasty in the sprayed plants, resulting in the plants being smaller that those in the control treatment. On the other hand, the GA3 treated seedling grew more vigorously than the control plants. Over the 90 days growing period, maximum growth rate in all treatments was recorded at the 60th – 70th days after sowing. Flowers in the NAA treated plants were seen at about six days later than those in the control treatment. In the GA3 treated plants, the flowers were seen at about 20 days earlier than those in the control treatment.

Abstract

Micropropagation of papaya variety “Khag Dum” and “Solo” was obtained by culturing papaya shoot apices and buds on modified MS medium containing 0.5 mg/1 BA and 0.2 mg/1 NAA. The increasing rate of multiple shoots was about 7 folds of plants during subculturing periods. The papaya plantlets approximately 2-3 cm. in height could be rooted on MS medium with 1.5 mg/1 IBA. After subculturing these shoots onto the same medium more than one years, the vitrification of shoots and plantlets was observed. Futher multiplication and rooting of vitrified papaya shoots and plantlets was unsuccessful. Therefore, interchangeable of the media containing white 0-5 mg/1 kinetin, 15% coconut water, and 0-0.2 mg/1 NAA were substituted for subculturing. Papaya plantlets were best geown on MS medium containing 15% coconut water, 0.1 mg/1 NAA, and 120 mg/1 adenine sulfate. About 80% of these plantlets were successfully rooted on MS medium with 1.5 mg/1 IBA.

Abstract

Line 10 Solo, the introduced papaya variety from Hawaii, was compared with three local varieties widely grown in Thailand, namely Coaco, Khaek Dam and Sai Nam Phung. It appeared that in the hermaphroditic trees, Line 10 Solo, flowered the latest and its height as measured at time of the first flower when the first fruit was ripened was higher than the other varieties. Also the percent of total soluble solids and flesh firmness of the Line 10 Solo was higher than other varieties. Flesh firmness in variety Khaek Dam did not differ significantly from Line 10 Solo, when ripened, was yellow white the three local varieties were reddish orange in colour. The Coaco and Khaek Dam plants tended to be dwarf while Sai Nam Phung was taller. Among the three local varieties, the fruit number per tree, fruit size and fruit weight did not differ significantly, but these characters differed from those of Line 10 Solo. The study on pistillate tree, was done only on the three local varieties. It was found that the characters studied, were not different from the hermaphroditic trees except Sai Nam Phung which produced less fruits per tree. The fruit quality, fruit size, fruit weight and flesh thickness were not different among the varieties studied, but total soluble solids, and cavity size were significantly different among the varieties, which was significantly different from the Coaco and Sai Nam Phung. Sai Nam Phung had highest number of seeds, (278 seeds per fruit) which markedly differed from that of Coaco and Khaek Dam varieties which had 16 and 1 seed (s) , respectively.
