Abstract

A field study was aimed to determine efficacy of albendazole against gastro-intestinal nematodes in ruminants. Forty-eight infested animals (27 beef cattle and 21 goats) were used. Albendazole [Albezol?, 11.25% (wt/vol)] was given orally to animals at a dosage of 10 mg/kg body weight. Blood samples were collected at 0, 28 and 56 days after treatment for determination of packed cell volume (PCV) and plasma protein (PP) concentrations. Fecal samples were collected at 0, 7, 28, and 56 days after treatment and were examined for worm eggs using simple floatation method. When available, egg-containing fecal samples were counted for the number of eggs per gram (EPG) of feces using Mc Master technique. For beef cattle, the average (min, max) EPGs in fecal samples were 144 (100, 600), 0 (0, 0), 0 (0, 0) and 4 (0, 100) at day 0, 7, 28, and 56 days after treatment, respectively. Average percentages of beef cattle infested with GI-nematodes were 100, 0, 0, and 4 at day 0, 7, 28, and 56 days after treatment, respectively. Mean PCV (? SD) was 32.2 (? 4.2) % at day 0, the means were higher at 28 and 56 days after treatment. Compared with day 0, mean PP concentration was also higher at 28 days after treatment. For goats, average percentages of goats infested with GI-nematodes were 100, 0, and 14 at day 0, 7, and 28 after treatment, respectively. Average (min, max) numbers of eggs counted on 5 microscopic fields (40X) were 10 (1, 30), 0 (0, 0), and 1 (1, 2) at day 0, 7, and 28 after treatment. Mean PCV at day 28 after treatment was 31.6 (? 4.1)% and was higher than mean at day 0, 24.1 (? 5.2)%. Mean PP concentrations did not differ between day 0 and day 28 after treatment. Results showed high efficacy of albendazole in treatment and control of gastro-intestinal nematodes of ruminants.

Abstract

Results from identification work yielded six nematodes, one cestode and one trematode, as the helminths accounting for the severe, mixed worm infection in the ranch. The Egg per Gram (E.P.G.) resulted to confirm the ovicidal effect of albendazole and Ivermectin against nematodes, however, the latter have more prolonged action than the former. Gross fecal examination showed that the mentioned drugs had a vermifugal and vermicidal effect on the nematodes. However, Ivermectin lacks this properties against cestodes. Insecticidal activity of Ivermectin was also compared with Coumaphos against lice (Haematopinus spp.). Both displayed the same activity with regards to the ability to get rid of the external parasites. Economic analysis showed that Ivermectin had more expensive than Albendazole and Coumaphos which combined regardless of labor and equipment needed. However, Ivermectin-treated animals showed a higher weight gain than those treated with Albendazole and Coumaphos and control.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to test efficacy of ivermectin powder and abendazole suspension against strongyles in pre-breeding mares with spontaneous infection. Thirty-five naturally stongle-infected mares, aged 4.1 - 19.0 years , weighed 386 -588 kg with strongyle eggs more than 100 eggs per gram (EPG) were randomly assigned to 3 treatment groups (control, 0.2 mg of ivermectin/kg of body weight ivermectin and 44.4 mg of albendazole/kg of body weight). The anthelmintics were mixed with 200 ml of tap water and given through stomach tube. The treated mares were allowed to graze as usual. EPG data were collected in the period of january 2005 to May 2005. Results indicated that mares had EPG reductions nearly 100% (99.5 - 97.9%) at week 2 and 4, 93.8% at week 6,and still had EPG reduction between 87 and 97% from week 8 to 12 after ivermectin treatment, respectively. In contrast, mares had EPG reductions 75% in the first 2 weeks and less than 40% during 4 weeks after albendazole treatment. The result suggested that ivermectin was effective for 12 weeks and albendazole was effective for 4 weeks against strongyles in pre-breeding mares. The EPG means in mares given ivermectin were significantly lower (p < 0.05) than controls during the 12 - week period of study. Additionally, the weekly EPGs against strongyles in pre-breeding mares. The EPG means in mares given ivermectin were significantly lower (p<0.05) than controls during the 12-week period of study. Additionally, the weekly EPGs in mares given ivermectin were significantly lower (p>0.05) than controls. Average body weights before and after treatments were not significant different (p > 0.05) among groups. In conclusion, powder formulation of ivermectin given through stomach tube was an effective drug to control strongyles in pre-breeding mares for 12 weeks.
