Group I consisted of experienced meditators of more than two years while group II was inexperienced new comers. The selected healthy volunteers have to practice meditation one hour daily for a period of four months. Venipuncture was done at the beginning (month 0) and at the end of the 4-month meditation. Fluorochrome conjugated monoclonal antibody to CD45, CD3, CD5, CD4, CD8, CD19 and CD(16+56) were incubated with peripheral blood lymphocytes and the number of positively labeled lymphocytes were determined by flow cytometer. The statistical analysis showed that CD3+ lymphocytes were significantly increased in both groups of volunteer after meditation practice for four months. In group I, the numbers of CD3+, CD8+ and CD(16+56)+ lymphocytes of experienced meditators were significantly increased (P<0.05, P<0.01 and P<0.01, respectively). For the inexperienced group, CD45+ lymphocytes were significantly increased (P < 0.05) as well as CD3+, CD5+ and CD8+ lymphocytes (P < 0.01). No alteration of CD19+ lymphocytes and no correlation between CD4+ and CD(16+56)+ lymphocytes were observed in both groups. The results presented herein indicated that meditation practice might aid in improvement of the immune system, especially the production of T-lymphocytes and natural killer cells. |

One thousand nine hundred and eighty five Thai religious males were the target samples selected by using multi - stage random sampling technique. Questionnaire was served as a tool for data collection. By means of t - test, F-test and post-hoc comparison the data were statistically analyzed. The results of the research were as follows : 1) child-raising by more love-supporting and more reasoning were highly related to the practicing and conscience of gratitude. Child-raising with less controlling and repay abandon were highly related to the conscience of gratitude, and more controlling child-raising was significantly related to the practicing of gratitude. 2) continuity of temple attendance, practicing the five precepts, and practicing meditation were the crucial factors involving the practicing and conscience of gratitude. |

Fifty-four high school students from Bangkapi School volunteered to participate in three groups of this study : regular meditators, irregular meditators and nonmeditating controls. Each group is consisted of students, with age between 16-18 years. All students were administered with the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) and one list test of nonsense syllables. Then, regular meditators practiced TM more than 50 percent of the during the four-month interval. Irregular meditators, practiced TM less than 50 percent of the time buring the four-month interval. The control group was instructed by the experimenters to sit easily with eyes closed refularly twice a day - 20 minutes in the morning and evening for the same four-month period. After four-month period, each group was administered with WAIS and the other list of nonsense syllables again. F-test and t-test were used for analysis of data. It found the regular meditators and irregular meditators showed significant increase in intelligence. The non-meditating controls showed insignificant increase in intelligence. In post-test, the mean I.Q. scores of the three groups showed significant differences. The regular meditators showed significant increase in learning ability more than the irregular meditators and non-meditating controls. |
