Abstract

Seaweed farming is highly developed in many south-east Asian countries. However, the seaweed industry in Bangladesh is an initial stage. People in Bangladesh are still not aware of the seaweed potential, although Bangladesh has a coastal zone of 480 km coastline and 25,000 km2 of coastal area with a huge population, supporting a variety of land use practices. This coastal area with sandy and muddy beaches, estuaries and mangrove swamps can be provided suitable substrate and habitats for various seaweeds cultivation. Bangladesh is rich with 133 species of seaweed and eight of them are commercially important. These could be produced commercially in a large scale. Seaweed having immense medicinal vales and delicious food also has the export potentials as seafood to fetch substantial foreign exchange. Seaweed is also an ingredient for bio-chemicals, Pharmaceuticals and cosmetics industries. Bangladesh should therefore promote the cultivation and consumption of seaweed among their people. Efforts are needed to increase production through improving harvesting techniques, creation of artificial habitats and seeding of suitable coastal areas. The technology for the cultivation of different commercially important seed stocks and their improvements should be developed through research. In addition, extensive surveys need to be conducted to identify suitable sites for large-scale seaweed culture.

Abstract

The interactive effect were studied of four planting dates (1 September, 1 October, 1 November and 1 December) and five promising strawberry cultivars (Sweet Charlie, Festival, Camarosa, FA 008 and BARI strawberry-1) over two years from winter 2009/2010 to 2010/2011 under subtropical climatic conditions in Bangladesh. Among the interactions, the cultivar Camarosa planted on 1 September exhibited the tallest plants followed by Festival planted on the same date, while plants of BARI Strawberry-1 were the shortest when planted on 1 December irrespective of the planting year. Regardless of planting year, the highest number of leaves per plant was obtained on Festival followed by Camarosa when planted on 1 September, while plants of FA 008 produced the lowest number of leaves per plant when planted on 1 December. Plants of Festival planted on 1 September exhibited the maximum mortality percentage followed by Camarosa and Sweet Charlie planted on the same date in 2009 and 2010. On the other hand, plants of BARI Strawberry-1 planted on 1 December in 2009 and 2010 exhibited only 3 and 5% plant mortality, respectively. Among the cultivars studied, Sweet Charlie planted on 1 October produced the highest yield (16.8 t.ha-1) in 2009/2010 and 16.7 t.ha-1 in 2010/2011, while BARI Strawberry-1 planted on 1 December produced the lowest yields (2.4 and 2.2 t.ha-1 in 2009/2010 and 2010/2011, respectively. The total soluble solids (TSS) and ascorbic acid contents of fruits were highly influenced by the interaction effect of planting date and cultivar and regardless of cultivar and year, fruits from early plantings contained more TSS and ascorbic acid than from late plantings in both years.

Abstract

The rotation interval for akashmoni (Acacia auriculiformis) plantations in Bangladesh is discussed for fuel wood and timber under strip plantation, woodlot, and community forest management systems. The rotation interval was calculated on the basis of the market price, the market mechanism, and the costs and returns of akashmoni plantations during 2000–2001. Considering the present management system, the mode of marketing, the market mechanism, and all economic criteria, the rotation interval of akashmoni species may be fixed at 8 years for fuel wood and 13–15 years for timber. The average market price of round wood and fuel wood was US $147.24 per m3 and US $0.72 per md (1 md = 37.3261 kg), respectively. The elimination rate varied from 5 to 90 percent depending on the plantation, the year, and the location, with values of 5 percent in the areas of Dinajpur, Bogra, and Dhaka and more than 50 percent in Tangail and Jessore. If the Net Present Value is considered as the rotation criterion, the rotation interval may be prescribed at age 15 years for timber. If the Internal Rate of Return and the Land Expectation Value are considered, the rotation interval may be fixed at 13 years for timber. Considering available data from plantations aged between 5 and 17 years, the recommended optimum rotation interval for timber and fuel wood was 15 and 8 years, respectively. At 15 years, the plantation was mature for timber use while fuel wood was a priority at 8 years as it was not necessary to use mature plantation wood.
